The Brentwood Board of Education honored outstanding Black leaders and community members during this week’s meeting

The Brentwood Union Free School District is proud to announce the launch of "Campus Fresh," a pioneering agricultural technology initiative at the Brentwood Freshman Center. In a landmark collaboration, students recently worked alongside Ag-Tech teacher Mr. Grow and personnel from Fork Farms to install a state-of-the-art “Flex Acre” hydroponic grow wall – the first of its kind to be installed in a school on the east coast. 

Computer science students from Mr. Magaletto’s class at the Freshman Campus recently expanded their classroom curriculum with a hands-on visit to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City by participating in the museum’s immersive "Code-a-Drone" workshop, applying coding logic to real-world aeronautics.

Student leaders from the district’s middle schools and the Freshman Campus recently engaged in peer mediation training, which brought together students who serve as upstanders peer mediators and restorative ambassadors in their schools.

The Brentwood community gathered at Brentwood High School for its annual Tree Lighting celebration on Dec. 12, marking the holiday season with an evening filled with joy, music and togetherness.

Brentwood Union Free School District students are connecting with one of the most remote places on Earth through a groundbreaking partnership with Stony Brook University’s Department of Geosciences.

The Brentwood Teachers Association, led by President Kevin Coyne, hosted its annual scholarship night on Dec. 11. The event raised $25,000 in scholarships that will be awarded to Brentwood seniors in June 2026.

The Brentwood Union Free School District celebrated a vibrant moment of tradition and community pride on Saturday, Dec. 6, as the 31st Annual Gary Mintz 5K Memorial Scholarship Run brought together students, staff, families and neighbors for a morning filled with purpose and heart.
 

More than 1,000 local families received fresh food and household staples during the Northwell Community Food Distribution event held Saturday, Nov. 22, at Brentwood High School. 

On Nov. 10, Brentwood’s Freshman Center hosted a heartfelt Veterans Day ceremony honoring those who have served our nation. Members of the American Legion Post 1006 joined students and staff for a morning filled with pride and gratitude.

Preschool bus drivers participated in a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) training on Nov. 7 focused on strategies for supporting positive behavior on the bus. Together, they explored how to foster an environment that helps every child begin and end their school day on a positive note. 

As part of the district’s ongoing work to bring its Graduation PLUS+ vision to life, members of Brentwood High School’s School Improvement Team and Restorative coaches gathered last week for a reflective “I AM” activity – a cornerstone of the district’s first-ever five-year Core Strategic Plan.

Nearly 1,000 students across the district participated in summer reading through Sora, the district’s digital library platform. 

Students from Brentwood’s Freshman Campus participated in the STEMx Festival at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City on Friday, October 10.

Brentwood’s oldest schoolhouse officially reopened on Oct. 10, completing a decades-long restoration that preserves a unique piece of the community’s history. 

Brentwood students Sebastian Avila, Ashley Bonilla Aguilar, Heaven Videa Arriaza and Ana Escobar – whose artwork will appear on the 2026 calendar cover – have been recognized by the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling (NYSAR³). Katie Amaya (not pictured) from Oak Park Elementary also won in the K-3 category.

Hispanic and Latino heritage – a source of pride and strength in Brentwood – took center stage at Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting, where trustees, educators, staff and community leaders were honored during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Additionally, the meeting closed with a big announcement: Stacey Brdey, principal of Southeast Elementary School, was appointed to succeed Assistant Superintendent Ann Palmer when she retires in December.

The Brentwood Freshman Center brought school spirit to a new level with its first-ever pep rally on June 13. Students and staff gathered to celebrate athletes from all sports seasons, recognizing their hard work, dedication, and achievements throughout the year. The event highlighted the pride and unity of the Brentwood community, creating a memorable experience for all in attendance.

The Cover Ceremony serves as a symbolic rite of passage for MBK participants, representing their commitment to personal responsibility, academic success, and uplifting one another as they continue their journeys. Mentors placed ceremonial caps on students’ heads, reminding them they are part of a lifelong brotherhood and a community that will always support them.

In addition to the competition, students engaged with industry professionals who offered real-world insights, aligning with the district’s Graduation PLUS+ initiative to prepare students for college and career pathways.

“The event was a tremendous success, and a powerful example of community engagement at its best,” said Bridget Nieves, head of the speech and hearing department. “Our district showed up in full force, and the day was filled with joy, pride, and connection.”

The powerful theme, “We lift, as we climb,” set the tone for a day focused on empowering boys and young men of color to achieve their full potential and shift the narrative surrounding their futures.

Throughout the school day, students presented original business concepts designed around mobile truck models. Fellow classmates visited the rotating presentations and cast their votes in two categories: Best Overall Presentation and Most Creative Business Concept.

The event offered hands-on sessions covering budgeting, credit, insurance, and entrepreneurship—part of a districtwide push to boost financial awareness and real-world readiness.

What better day than Earth Day to take a closer look at some of these inspiring initiatives?

Students rolled up their sleeves and dove into hands-on activities, learning about the crucial role oysters and salt marshes play in Long Island's ecosystem.

One student was elected governor for the 2025-26 New York State Youth and Government Program, another was selected for the prestigious Conference on National Affairs in North Carolina and two were recognized as outstanding delegates out of more than 800 participants.

The atmosphere was electric with upbeat music from the DJ, bursts of laughter and a sea of pink balloons and décor setting the tone. Raffle prizes added to the excitement, while smiles, hugs and cheers echoed the event’s spirit of unity.

Guided by her Geometry teacher, Mrs. Tara Luce, Suraksha presented an original research paper titled “Astronomy and Mathematics,” which explored the powerful and historic connection between mathematical theories and astronomical discoveries.

Students at Brentwood Freshman Campus are diving into Computer Science Education Week with creativity and innovation!

This week, the Brentwood School District celebrated College and Careers Week, engaging students across all grade levels in meaningful exploration of career opportunities and pathways to post-secondary success. Throughout the week, the youngest learners envisioned their future professions, while middle and high school students completed Naviance surveys.

The program culminated in a two-day festival of performances at the West Middle School Auditorium.

Seven groups from BUFSD competed against 32 other school districts across New York State in the prestigious competition.

The artwork of the students was submitted for judgement and hosted by New York State Congressman Andrew Garbarino.

The Youth and Government Club got the chance to pass bills on the floor of the Suffolk County legislature.
